How The Grinch Stole Christmas!

We had a great time reading the timeless tale of how the Grinch stole Christmas.  Many of us had read this story and were excited to hear it again. What a fun choice!  At the end of the story we even had our own class rendition of the song "You're a mean one Mr. Grinch"! Halloween at Calvert!

It's Halloween! It's Halloween!
The moon is full and bright
And we shall see what can't be seen
On any other night.

Skeletons and ghosts and ghouls,
Grinning goblins fighting duels,
Werewolves rising from their tombs,
Witches on their magic brooms.

In masks and gowns
we haunt the street
And knock on doors
for trick or treat.

Tonight we are
the king and queen,
For oh tonight
it's Halloween!

Web of Sounds

Who knew that we could have so much fun with yarn? This week we have focused on the short i sound. Our task today was to create a web using only words that had the targeted sound. After we said a short i word we then tossed the yarn ball to another person while still holding onto one end. We continued taking turns and were able to successfully weave the web! A few of the words we cam up with were: wig, tin, will, pig, hill, pill, igloo, iguana, and fin.

Shape Creations!

What a great discovery! Using pattern blocks we were able to manipulate individual shapes and place them together to create a new picture. Above, a friend decided to use shapes to make a boy and girl holding hands. The detail is amazing. The boy is wearing a tie and the girl is dressed in a red skirt. Great work!

Look below to see how we used shapes to form other exciting objects. We created a flower, a bow tie, a person, a bridge, a rocket ship, a rose, buildings, and dinosaurs.

Slap It!

Our new sight word game "Slap It" was a big hit! Each child takes turns as they read a word. If you read the word correctly you get to keep it. Wild cards marked by a smiley face sticker randomly come up in the deck. The first one to slap the card gets to keep it. The object of the game is to have the most cards when the deck runs out. This game can be made easily and may be a great addition to your sight word review at home.

Pumpkin BINGO!

We had so much fun playing pumpkin BINGO together. All of our sight words from the year were used and we did an awesome job reading them aloud as we played! This is an easy game to play at home also. I hope you enjoy our pictures.

Reviewing Shapes

We have had so much fun learning about shapes in chapter 2 of our math book. As we were reviewing, we found that we can create different shapes with our hands! Take a look out our great work.
