Pilots Can Pattern!

Feel free to review pattern types with your Pilot mathematician at home!

ABB Pattern

Pilot friends did an amazing job working with ABB patterns today!

Digraph: sh, th, wh, ch, tch

Seventh Age students have done a wonderful job working with digraphs. Today we reviewed, completed a workbook page, then read a short story aloud. After reading, we looked to find digraphs within the text. When we found a word that contained a digraph we were sure to highlight.
Great work!

Computer Lab

Today we went to the computer lab to reinforce our skills. Using the SmartBoard we previewed our lesson which practiced counting using one-to-one correspondence as well as number recognition.
After we all had a few turns on the SmartBoard we moved to individual computers.

ABC Patterning

Pilot Mathematicians did a great job creating ABC patterns.
We first created ABC patterns using colored manipulatives. We were able to identify the shape of the manipulatives as cubes (from our last unit on three dimensional figures)! Next we moved to our worksheet and created our own patterns.
Great Work!

"Ten Hens"

Sixth Age readers have been working hard on their short "e" words. After completing a page from their phonics book we read the story "Ten Hens". Then we had an opportunity to partner read the selection.

Bravo!

Patterning with Manipulatives

Today we created two patterns using manipulatives. We were able to pattern by three separate attributes. We patterned by color, size, and type of animal! Pilot mathematicians earned a sticker for all of their hard work.

Patterning

Pilot mathematicians have done a wonderful job creating 2 patterns.

Check us out below as we explain our work:

New Series!

Sixth Age readers are excited to have started the 1-2 reading series. We are off and running with our phonics. Focusing on short "e" we have reviewed the -et, -en, -est, and -ell word families.

Digraph -sh

Seventh Age readers are doing a wonderful job with their next unit. Today we reviewed the -sh digraph. We compiled a list where the digraph was found either at the beginning or the end of the word. We also put these words into context by using them within a sentence.
Great Work!

Pilot mathematicians did a great job today as they identified and matched three dimensional objects.

Fun With a Cone!

Pilot friends did an amazing job today as they made party hats to bring the cone figure to life!

First, they had to use their fine motor skills as they cut out the cone template. Then, they decorated the cone hats with colorful circles. Last came the assembly! Each student was able to wear their cone party hat as they built structures using three dimensional figures.

Chapter Four: Three-Dimensional Figures

Pilot mathematicians are doing a wonderful job exploring three-dimensional figures. We are currently working with cubes, cylinders, cones, and spheres.
We continue to work on naming and identifying these objects. Today we went a step further and discussed how these figures will move. Will they roll or slide? We used tape to mark the start and finish line. Before we began we discussed each figure. Does it have flat sides, or is it round? Does it have both flat and round surfaces?

We made a prediction then tested our hypothesis. Here is what we found:

Cube: The cube does not roll because it has flat sides. When we push the cube it slides across the tape.

Sphere: Round on all sides, the sphere roles when pushed.

Cone: When placed on the flat bottom the cone is able to slide from start to finish. When placed on its side the cone will roll in a circle. It can not roll in a straight line from start to finish like a sphere.

Cylinder: When placed on the top or bottom flat surfaces the cylinder will slide. If the cylinder is turned on its rounded side it will roll! Wow, what a dynamic figure!

"All That Corn"

Sixth Age students did a wonderful job sequencing and illustrating events in the story, "All That Corn" by Lucy Floyd.

Below you can see their hard work:
1. Farmers plant corn.
2. Tractors pick corn.
3. Children eat corn.

RAVENS SPIRIT!

Calvert was lucky enough to have the official Ravens cheerleaders, Ravens band, Poe the bird, and two real Raven birds visit us during our assembly today!

GO RAVENS!

"All That Corn" Sight Words

Sixth Age friends did a great job playing memory with their new sight words.
