Where Do Frogs Come From?

Today we read the story "Where Do Frogs Come From?" by Alex Vern. We took turns reading aloud and we also practiced choral reading. This story gave us lots of new information . After we had finished reading and discussing the story we decided to act out the life of a frog.
Frogs come from small eggs. Above we are pretending to be eggs.

Pop! Pop! A tadpole pops out of an egg. Look at our cute tails.
Be sure to swim fast or you may be eaten by a fish!
After eating lots of plants the tadpole grows two back legs and two small front legs. Soon the tail is gone and we are frogs! Check us out as we use our strong back legs to hop around.
Great Job Readers!

8 is Great!

We have really enjoyed working on forming the number eight! We started off on a large scale tracing the number with only our pointer finger. Then we transitioned to tracing with chalk. After this fun activity we were ready to sit back down at our tables and create the number eight in our workbook.

We discovered that the letter "S" is hiding inside the number eight! Making the letter "S" then connecting back up to the top really makes forming an eight much easier! Phew.

Digraph: sh

Sh is also a digraph. Digraphs are two letters put together to make a new single sound. Today we read "Shelly's New Shoes" by Maria Fleming. We listened for words that contained the sh digraph. Sometimes the sound was found at the beginning of a word (shoes, Shelly). Other times we heard the sound at the end of words (crash, trash).

As you can see in the above picture, we like to put our finger over our mouths as if we are giving the quiet signal. This helps us to remember the sound that the sh digraph makes.

Partner Tic-Tac-Toe

Before we introduce our new sight words we spent some time reviewing the most recent words. The friends partnered up for a friendly game of tic-tic-toe. Fun was had by all. We had the boards placed in plastic casing so we were able to easily erase our markings and begin a new game.

Digraph: th

Th is a digraph. Digraphs are two letters put together to make a new single sound. Today we read "The Thing That Went Thump" by Maria Fleming. We listened for words that contained the th digraph. Sometimes the sound was found at the beginning of a word (thump, thirty,Thursday). Other times we heard the sound at the end of words (bath, teeth, with).

After reading the story the friends participated in a game. It was Ms. Clark versus the 6th Age readers. I read a series of words. Then I read 10 separate riddles and the friends needed to match each
th word with the correct riddle. In the end the readers beat Ms. Clark! The score was ten to zero!

Below you can see the game we played. Have your child play against you.

Is this a 6 or a 9?

Being able to identify the number 6 and the number 9 can be confusing. A few of us in Pilot Math were wondering how we would be able to tell the two numbers apart? We decided to draw pictures and create a saying to help us remember the difference between the two.

While comparing the two numbers we decided that the "6 has a belly" and the "nine has a head"

To help us remember we drew pictures where the six had food inside it's belly and the nine had a face and a hat.

Great Job Friends!

Once we were able to identify the number six it was time to properly form the number. We practiced forming the number on a large scale. Using plastic casing we were able to trace the number six with dry-erase markers. After each time we wiped the surface clean with a tissue then tried again. Check us out below, hard at work!

Partner Reading

"When I am old with You" by Angela Johnson

7th Age readers get comfy cozy as they partner read. Each pair of students takes turns reading the story page by page. Ask your child if they enjoyed the story? What was their favorite part?

Great work friends!
